Mental First Aid for Families: Recognizing and Responding to Crises from the Classroom (Room 912)
Many families in New York City, particularly in communities of color, are in a state of urgency due to a severe lack of mental health awareness and resources. This workshop will explore culturally responsive mental health care as well as provide training for families to recognize early signs of mental health challenges in students. During the training, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of mental health issues and how they can work to create a support system for their students starting in the home. The objective is to equip participants with mental health first aid skills, including de-escalation techniques, emotional support strategies, and knowledge of resources to ensure students get connected with additional help. By the end of the session, they will develop a toolbox that includes a step-by-step action plan for providing emotional support to their student and gain access to a list of citywide mental health resources.
