Mapping for Liberation: Shifting Conditions for Students at the Margins (2026)

Mapping for Liberation: Shifting Conditions for Students at the Margins (Room 908)

Culturally Responsive Systems Track

Presenters: Dr. Vanessa Coleman

This interactive workshop introduces a systems-based approach to equity by transforming the conditions that produce harm for marginalized students. Participants will use systems thinking to map equity challenges, identifying how policies, practices, and power structures shape student experiences. The session integrates liberatory practices to help educators reimagine school conditions in ways that repair harm and elevate community wisdom. Through guided mapping activities and liberatory design protocols, attendees will engage in collaborative problem-solving to shift classroom and district systems toward healing-centered, culturally responsive approaches. Participants will leave with a systems mapping template, a liberatory practices guide, and an action planning tool to support ongoing design and implementation in their own contexts.
