Integrating Professional Development and Leadership Development to Promote Equity for Migrant Students Practice (Room 912)
Culturally Responsive Systems Track
Presenters: Nikki Rank & Dr. Samantha Chung
As schools continue to serve increasingly diverse populations, educators need practical strategies to foster inclusive, asset-based learning environments. This workshop explores how integrating Critical Professional Development with leadership development can advance equity for migrant students. Grounded in community cultural wealth and critical race theory, participants will engage with the Participatory Action Research approach developed in an NYC elementary school navigating significant demographic change. Attendees will explore protocols that center migrant students’ lived experiences and examine leadership strategies, including student shadowing protocols, self-reflection, and frameworks that support equity-focused initiatives. Participants will leave with actionable frameworks for designing and leading professional learning that empowers teachers to implement culturally responsive practices.
