Her Stories, Our Standards: Transforming Literacy & Black Studies Through CRSE Leadership (2026)

Her Stories, Our Standards: Transforming Literacy & Black Studies Through CRSE Leadership- (Room 905)

Culturally Responsive Practices Track

Presenters: Dr. Denise L  Williams & Dr. Yaribel Mercedes

Led by two Black female scholar-practitioners, this interactive workshop highlights the importance of curriculum grounded in culturally and historically responsive literacies. Leaders will examine how to meaningfully integrate Black Studies into ELA and Social Studies to provide students with an affirming understanding of global African diasporic contributions. Using Dr. Gholdy Muhammad’s HRL Framework and the Black Studies Curriculum, we will engage in inquiry to surface instructional practices rooted in ancestral wisdom. Together, we will identify leadership "power moves" that uphold curriculum integrity, promote critical thinking, and elevate culturally responsive literacy. By the end of the session, participants will be equipped to champion inclusive, rigorous Black Studies implementation across their school communities.
