Healing from Fear: Equipping Educators to Address Equity and Justice in a Challenging Climate (Room 905)
Culturally Responsive Practices Track
Presenters: Josh Bornstein
This interactive workshop helps educators understand and navigate the fear that often arises when engaging equity and justice issues. Drawing on the work of Resmaa Menakem and Sean Ginwright, we’ll explore healing-centered approaches that support courage, compassion, and grounded leadership. Participants will examine the four common fear responses—fight, flight, freeze, and fawn—and learn practical strategies to notice these patterns, respond with intention, and stay connected to purpose rather than panic.
Through reflective activities and discussion, we’ll consider how healing, resistance, and self-preservation intersect in equity work. Educators will leave with tools to:
• Recognize and regulate fear responses
• Cultivate empathy, resilience, and a growth mindset
• Prioritize sustainable self-care as part of justice-centered practice
This session offers a supportive space for educators to strengthen their capacity to lead equity efforts with clarity, confidence, and care.
