Equity Through Project-Based Approaches Practices (2026)

Equity Through Project-Based Approaches Practices (Room 904)

Culturally Responsive Practices Track

Presenters: Dolan Morgan

How can we design project-based units that ensure all students—especially multilingual learners (MLLs)—develop and apply essential knowledge and skills through authentic, real-world work? Project-Based Learning (PBL) offers a powerful pathway for meaningful inquiry, performance-based assessment, and real-world application. This workshop draws on insights from students and teachers who have implemented successful projects with multilingual learners to support participants in designing rigorous, inclusive learning experiences that promote deep understanding, multiple opportunities for mastery, and strong student ownership.

The session unfolds in three phases. First, participants explore sample project-based units across content areas, analyzing how extended inquiry supports skill development and application. Next, educators engage a framework for effective PBL design, emphasizing clear learning goals, aligned assessments, and meaningful demonstrations of understanding. Finally, participants collaborate in discipline-specific groups to generate project ideas that intentionally integrate language development and content learning.

Participants will leave with a flexible, scaffolded project plan and practical resources to support equitable implementation.
