Ensuring that Teachers Thrive; Culturally Responsive Schools for Equity (2026)

Ensuring that Teachers Thrive; Culturally Responsive Schools for Equity- (Room 904)

Culturally Responsive Systems Track

Presenters: Jon Harriman

Based on four decades of work on teacher retention by the Internationals Network, this session explores a framework for teacher thriving through equity-centered, assets-based school cultures. Participants will examine how to support and retain educators through structured, embedded systems that offer professional growth and mastery. We will discuss integrating professional learning that supports teachers' agency over their development, utilizing strategies like mentorship programs and peer learning groups. Practical strategies will be shared, such as creating mentorship programs, peer learning groups, and reflective practices that encourage teachers to continuously evolve in culturally responsive teaching. Grounded in creating inclusive environments for both students and educators, this session provides actionable strategies to cultivate and retain a high-quality, diverse workforce. By the end of the session, participants will walk away with actionable strategies to cultivate and retain culturally responsive educators in their own schools.
