Curriculum, Pedagogy, and Power (Room 903)
This session will guide participants through decolonizing curriculum design by examining representational balance in educational materials. Attendees will explore strategies to center the identities, cultures, and languages of racially and linguistically diverse students. Through reflective exercises and group discussions, participants will uncover how power dynamics shape curricular decisions and discover actionable methods to shift instructional practices toward inclusivity and liberation.
The goals of this session are to: 1) Analyze the concept of representational balance and its role in decolonizing education; 2) Identify power dynamics within existing curricular structures; and 3) Develop strategies for integrating student identities and cultures into the curriculum. The topics included are power structures in material design, culturally responsible content selection, analysis of representation in text and visuals, and inclusive language use. Attendees will create an outline for a lesson or unit to analyze the representational balance of people, cultures, and topics.
