Culturally Relevant Hands on STEM Learning

Culturally Relevant Hands on STEM Learning (Room 405)

Our culturally relevant, hands-on STEM learning session offers an engaging and inclusive approach to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by incorporating students’ cultural backgrounds and real-world experiences into the curriculum. This session focuses on empowering students from diverse communities, particularly those underrepresented in STEM, by creating a meaningful connection between their lives and the STEM concepts they are learning.

In this session, participants engage in an activity centered around environmental sustainability, a global issue with local impact. They begin by exploring a hands on activity, exploring the disparities that exist within Black & Brown communities, and conclude with clear action steps for growth.

They work in groups, encouraging collaboration and communication, as they explore educational pedagogy and bridge caps. This activity not only teaches participants the scientific principles of filtration but also helps them appreciate the ingenuity and resourcefulness of cultures that have been practicing sustainable living for centuries.
The session wraps up with a reflection on how science, technology, and culture intersect, inviting participants to think critically about the role they can play in solving modern environmental challenges. The focus on cultural relevance not only deepens students’ engagement but also fosters a sense of belonging in STEM fields, helping them to see themselves as future innovators who can contribute to their communities and beyond.
