Critical Consciousness as the Pulse of Learning: Youth Power in School and Beyond

The TURN-UP is a response to experiencing education in ways that are irrelevant to students’ lives, and oppressive to their spirits. Students often feel like they don’t matter, have no voice, and have little power to be change-makers. The turn-up is a vehicle that allows students to demonstrate that they require MORE from school. It reveals that students are aware of what is not working well—that they know how to fix the system as a whole, and elements within.

Zaretta Hammond calls critical consciousness “the ultimate higher order thinking skill.” Let’s talk about how to provide the academic experiences that support the young people we teach, mentor, and love to turn up in ways that make a difference to themselves and the world around them.
