Creating Cultures of Care in Urban High Schools

Creating Cultures of Care in Urban High Schools (Room 905)

This interactive session will empower participants with the strategies, structures, and design principles implemented in high-performing urban high schools in Western NY. The session will equip participants with research-based tools rooted in equity and culturally responsive practices to implement at their own schools. The session will center around collective teacher efficacy, student leadership, strong structures and systems, and inclusive and representative shared-decision making. The session will identify ways that district-level leaders and boards can enact policies that lead to strong school cultures, remove barriers, and embrace the unique identities of each school within the district/system.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to describe equity-based strategies to build cultures of care in secondary urban high schools. Workshop attendees will walk away with intellectual, digital, and material resources to consider and to implement in their own school buildings or systems.
