anti-Critical Race Theory Measures
Based on data from the UCLA School of Law's CRT Forward Tracking Project, 870 anti-Critical Race Theory measures were introduced between September 2020 and October 2024. These measures include bills, resolutions, executive orders, and other governmental actions at the local, state, and federal levels.
Key statistics on anti-CRT Measures since 2020:
- Total Measures: As of October 2024, 870 anti-CRT measures had been introduced.
- Peak in activity: 2021 and 2022 saw the highest number of measures, with 563 proposals targeting the teaching of race and racism. The pace of new legislation slowed in 2023 and 2024.
- Geographic spread: The CRT Forward database indicates that anti-CRT measures have been introduced in every state except Delaware, often at the local level if not statewide. In 2021 alone, 44 states either introduced bills or took other steps to restrict how teachers discuss topics like racism and sexism.
- Enacted measures: Of the 563 measures introduced in 2021 and 2022, 241 were adopted. As of early 2023, 16 states had enacted specific anti-CRT legislation.
