None of the Above: Disrupting the “Common Sense” Behind Standardized Testing and Crafting a New Narrative to Lead School-based Change

In this workshop, participants will engage with current research about the impact of standardized test-based accountability on equitable teaching and learning juxtaposed against the public attitudes, beliefs, and understandings that inform the policies upholding standardized testing norms. Participants will apply insights from this research and from their own experience to co-construct a “core story” that they can use to engage colleagues and other stakeholders in their school and local community in collective efforts to enact more student-centered, equity-oriented systems of assessment and school improvement. Participants will walk away with research-tested messages to address misconceptions about alternative approaches to assessment and the initial draft of a plan they can use to make change in their own context.
