From "for" to "with": Building Capacity for Equitable Education (Room 903)
Culturally Responsive Practices Track
Presenters: Dr. Corey Pickering & Dr. Luda Bryzzheva
This session is designed for school leaders, equity leaders, and educators committed to advancing racial justice. It serves as an intentional invitation—particularly for those racialized as White—to deepen critical consciousness and strengthen personal accountability in equity work. Rather than framing equity as something done for others, the session centers it as an ongoing, internal practice grounded in reflection and collective responsibility.
Participants will engage key elements of Gholdy Muhammad’s Historically Responsive Literacy (HRL) Framework, Janet Helms’ Racial Identity Development models, antiracist movement principles, and Resmaa Menakem’s concept of a “healthy white culture.” These frameworks offer both intellectual grounding and practical direction.
Through guided reflection, attendees will identify their motivations, strengths, and growth areas within their racial equity practice.
Participants will leave with actionable strategies, conceptual tools, and a clearer pathway for developing an equity praxis that supports culturally responsive and culturally sustaining approaches in schools.
