Amplifying the Voices of Elementary Schoolers with Speech Impediments
Whether it is whole classroom discussions or small group activities, classroom participation plays a significant role in the elementary school experience. Beyond providing various academic benefits, participation greatly shapes young students’ self-esteem and sense of identity. However, not all students participate equitably, thus restricting their access to these crucial benefits.
Focus: This session amplifies the often-marginalized experiences of elementary schoolers with speech impediments (ESSIs), many of whom struggle to engage in discussion-based activities.
Goals: Educators, staff, and school leaders will reflect on the five factors influencing ESSI participation: ESSI confidence, inclusion and peer awareness, educator training on fostering awareness, speech therapy, and educator-caregiver-speech therapist communication systems. By the end of the presentation, attendees will achieve these objectives:
1. Assess the five factors influencing ESSI participation within their classrooms.
2. Formulate an actionable, school-specific plan to create a welcoming and affirming classroom culture for elementary schoolers with and without speech impediments
