Implemented in 40 New York City high schools, the Expanded Success Initiative (ESI) was aimed at improving college and career readiness among Black and Latino male students. As part of the Research Alliance’s evaluation of the initiative, we conducted case studies in five ESI schools, observing programs in action, and speaking with educators, school leaders, and students. Drawing on these sources, we compiled a set of guides that offer concrete examples of how ESI schools were attempting to better support young men of color. Originally released in 2016, the guides address:
- Creating Supportive Bonds of Brotherhood
- Culturally Relevant Education
- Early Exposure and Preparation for College
- Improving Academic Readiness for College
In the wake of the initiative, some of the strategies ESI schools implemented have become much more common across the landscape of NYC high schools. We believe the resources, discussion questions for educators, and insights from students and teachers remain highly relevant. We hope you find the guides useful in planning for the 2024-2025 school year!
