Using AI to promote race-blind charging decisions in prosecutions

Dr. Alex Chohlas-Wood and Computational Policy Lab colleagues designed a race-blind charging software that automatically removes race-related information from case files. Dr. Chohlas-Wood and his team piloted the redaction software on a handful of California attorney offices, including the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office. The team is working on executing a large-scale experiment to determine its impact on charging outcomes. This timely work was featured in a LAW360 press story with various quotes from Dr. Chohlas-Wood.
