Dr. Joseph Cimpian is a principal investigator on a three year, National Science Foundation (NSF) funded project, Collaborative Research: Examining Elementary Mathematics Teachers' Behaviors and Learning with an Online Professional Development Platform. This project is in collaboration with the University of Illinois, and University of Chicago.
Given the lack of quality in-person options for teachers in low-resourced schools, this project aims to understand how teachers learn within an online, asynchronous professional development context. Using a design-based research approach, the study will first use data mining, surveys, and interviews to create and describe teacher-learner profiles based on their online learning strategies and "lurking" behavior. Finally, the project will design and experimentally test interventions to see how effective learning strategies impact teachers' reflection on practice and their math anxiety, ultimately seeking to improve the design of asynchronous online learning resources.
