Connecting with poet Amanda Gorman: Dr. McAllister on difficulties with the 'r' sound

National youth poet laureate Amanda Gorman captured hearts around the country with her uplifting inaugural poem "The Hill We Climb." She has also spoken openly about her struggles with speech difficulties, particularly with the pronunciation of the English 'r' sound. Treatment for children with persisting 'r' difficulties forms the focus of Drs. Tara McAllister and Jennifer Hill's NIH R01 project "Biofeedback-enhanced treatment for speech sound disorder." NYU Provost Katy Fleming came to Dr. McAllister's lab (pre-pandemic) to learn more about her research on technologies to enhance pronunciation training. The video was highlighted in NYU social media and the Scope Monthly newsletter in conjunction with the coverage of Amanda Gorman and the 'r' sound.
