Drs. Alex Chohlas-Wood and Ravi Shroff, who lead the ADAPPT Lab, were awarded a $450,000 grant by the Heising-Simons Foundation to support public defenders with AI-enabled discovery triage. The research team will develop and evaluate open-source software which will help reduce the heavy discovery burden for public defenders while improving their ability to reason over large volumes of evidence both early in a case and at trial. The software will:
- Inventory and summarize digital evidence in structured, navigable formats linked directly to the underlying sources.
- Detect contradictions and inconsistencies across sources, surfacing candidate conflicts for attorney verification and review;
- Act as a fact-checker and fact-tracer by testing potential attorney claims against the evidentiary record, with citations to underlying materials.
