District Cohort: From Integration to Antiracism (FIAR) Series

NYU will host a cohort for parents and caregivers across the district. This 6-8-session series will explore the challenges and opportunities that come with being part of a multiracial, multiclass school district. Participants will begin to gain tools and strategies for creating powerful and equitable parent organizations. Before the start of the series, we will facilitate a 90-minute listening session with parents and caregivers in order for us to gain understanding and context for parent/caregiver experiences with race, equity, and diversity, in the district and in their schools. Training sessions will focus on relationship building, a brief history of race and racism, recognizing and addressing microaggressions, and tools for better & equitable communications, outreach, and facilitation, as well as practice in navigating difference and conflict. FIAR includes large and small group work and time to explore the lived experience of different racial groups in schools and beyond. Sessions are interactive and include time for learning, reflection, and sharing. We encourage schools to send cohorts of 3-5 people from individual schools.

The workshops are designed for staff who work with families (primarily parent coordinators) and will support their learning and capacity building as they work to support our culturally, racially and linguistically diverse families.
