Drama Therapy

Therapeutic Theatre Series

Graduate students in drama therapy may participate in one or more productions in our therapeutic theatre series. Therapeutic theatre is the intentional use of performance to address psychological, physical, and social concerns and promote health and wellbeing. It is one approach used by drama therapists to support goals such as reminiscence, recovery, rehabilitation, and advocacy.  Every year, we collaborate with community organizations and mental health clinics who want to bring their stories to the stage. We co-create theatre with real people about their real lives. For example, as part of their course in Therapeutic Theatre (MPADT-GE 2121), students collaborated with JASA, an innovator in aging services in NYC, the Penn South Program for Seniors, and Music Theatre International to produce a pilot production of Fiddler on the Roof Sr. Our collaboration with Penn South continues with groups led by student interns involving playwriting, scene study, improv, and stand-up comedy.

Internships

During your first year, you will participate in a course on clinical populations. This course combines our unique theatre-based pedagogy with a fieldwork component that will prepare you for internships. You will then do a Clinical Internship throughout your second year where you can expect to work in hospitals, schools, rehabilitation facilities, community organizations, and mental health clinics.

Research

In addition to coursework and internships, students in drama therapy will complete a substantial thesis project that demonstrates both theoretical and accumulated clinical experience. Upon completion of the thesis, you will present your work as a poster session in a student research symposium. View a sample of past theses. Students may also participate in projects connected with our Theatre and Health Lab.
