Introduction to Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy for High School Students

We are planning to run this workshop as a remote program for summer 2023; participants will attend virtually over Zoom.

Course Fee: $250

Learning Objectives: 
This course will include:

  1. Information about the field of music therapy and how one becomes a music therapist
  2. Historical and philosophical foundations of the Nordoff-Robbins approach
  3. Video examples and case studies of clinical work
  4. Musical resources and improvisational techniques in assessment and treatment

While attending remotely in the comfort of your own home, you will be able to participate in the course with voice, piano, guitar, or other instrument of your choice – experimenting with the musical concepts as they are introduced.

Instructors: Alan Turry, DA, LCAT, MT-BC, Director, Nordoff-Robbins Center for Music Therapy; Jacqueline Birnbaum, MSEd, MA, LCAT, MT-BC; and NYU Steinhardt Nordoff-Robbins Center staff.

Schedule and Format: The course is scheduled for 9:30am–4:30pm (Eastern Time), with a total of 120 minutes of break time each day. Format includes lectures, video excerpts of clinical work, and experiential workshops. 

Prerequisites: None. We welcome all high school students with an interest in learning about the field of music therapy and how music can be used to help meet individual goals.

Cancellation and Refund Policy: Enrollment is limited. If there is insufficient enrollment, the course will be canceled and all fees refunded. Your place in the course will be guaranteed if we receive payment in full by July 10, 2023. A 50% refund will be given for cancellations requested up until 14 days prior to the start date. No refunds will be given within the 2 weeks prior to the start date. Registered participants who cannot attend may send a substitute with prior notification.
