Providing rigorous evidence to inform education policy and practice in New York City

William Marinell, Ed. D.

Dr. William Marinell is a Research Associate at the Research Alliance for New York City Schools. Dr. Marinell is a recent alumnus of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where he studied public education policy and research in the Education Policy, Leadership, and Instructional Practice program. Before joining the Research Alliance, Dr. Marinell's research focused on mid-career entrants to teaching-teachers who enter the profession after having worked in fields outside of education. Using a variety of research designs and methodologies, Dr. Marinell has investigated the skills and knowledge that math and science mid-career entrants bring to their schools, the trends over time in mid-career entrants' personal and professional characteristics and in their impressions of their work and worksites, and mid-career entrants' potential to help avert a staffing shortage.

Dr. Marinell is the co-author and sole author of a number of articles and book chapters related to k-12 education, including "Angling for Access, Bartering for Change" (Teachers College Record, 2005); "Of Bombs, Blackness, and Ideal Balconies: The Power and Potential of Electronic Communication in the Classroom" (in Future Courses: A Compendium of Thought About Education, Technology, and The Future, 2001); and "Capturing Authenticity, Transforming Perception" (Harvard Educational Review, 2008).

Prior to pursuing his graduate studies, Dr. Marinell taught English literature and writing to elementary, middle, and high school students in New York City, the suburbs of Boston and Philadelphia, and in Kenya and Bangladesh. Dr. Marinell holds a B. A. in English from Amherst College and Ed. M. and Ed. D. degrees from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
