To best meet the needs of our students, we have decided to suspend enrollment in the Master of Arts in Teaching Music, All Grades: Initial Certification. We encourage you to explore Brass Studies (MM), Jazz Studies (MM), Percussion Studies (MM), Piano Studies: Solo Piano (MM), Piano Studies: Collaborative Piano (MM), String Studies (MM), or Woodwind Studies (MM).

Learn specialized and contemporary approaches to teaching music through a wide range of courses in applied music, theory, and pedagogy. You’ll gain hands-on experience through a semester of fieldwork and two semesters of supervised student teaching at NYU-affiliated New York City schools. Upon graduation, you’ll be eligible for New York State initial teaching certification as a teacher of music in all grades (Pre-K–12).

Throughout your program of study, you will engage in course work, hands-on learning, and research in the following areas as you prepare to become an innovative educator of music:

  • Music research
  • Music education foundations
  • Urban and culturally relevant music pedagogies
  • Technology-enhanced music teaching strategies
  • How to develop a curriculum and build a repertoire suitable for your teaching practice
  • Pedagogical techniques and methods for elementary and secondary school classrooms
  • Approaches to teaching music with special learners

 You'll also have opportunities to work on your musical craft by participating in a variety of performing ensembles and chamber groups directed by leading New York artists.

You will graduate eligible for New York State initial teaching certification as a teacher of music in all grades (Pre-K–12). Learn more about teacher certification and our degree's accreditation

You'll gain valuable experience through intensive fieldwork and two semesters of student teaching at New York City public and independent schools under the close supervision of experienced music teachers. Plus, with dynamic and diverse classroom settings throughout New York City, you’ll get to work with students from numerous backgrounds and experiences.
