INITIAL NY STATE TEACHER CERTIFICATION: This program leads to New York State foreign language teacher certificate. All students must pass the following examinations before graduation to be eligible for NY State teacher certificate.

  • Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST)

  • Assessment of Teaching Skills Written (Secondary ATS-W)

  • Content Specialty Test in Target Language (CST)

  • Content Specialty Test in ESOL (CST)

OTHER STATE REQUIREMENTS FOR FL/ESOL CERTIFICATION:

  • 30 credits of study of the target language at college level or officially recognized equivalent (FL)

  • 9 credits in liberal arts courses: 3 in Mathematics, 3 in science, and 3 in social studies (TESOL)

  • 12 credits in the study of a language other than English (TESOL)

English Proficiency Requirements for International Students: All International students from non English-speaking countries must be tested at American Language Institute prior to matriculation to the major program. Based on the test results, one may be exempt from English courses or required to take the following:

  • DESL1-DC 9006 Comprehensive English as a second language (full time ALI?no major courses)
  • DESL1-DC 9160 Foundations of Academic English (part-time ALI?two major courses)
  • DESL1-DC 9174 Workshop in College English (all international students must pass this course)
  • DESL1-DC 9184 Advanced Workshop in College English (Optional)
  • Exempt from ALI course work (tested out/BA from an English-speaking university, etc.)
