A Liberal Arts Education in a Conservatory Setting

This bachelor of music degree with a focus on percussion studies combines advanced performance training and a full liberal arts education with myriad performance opportunities in a variety of ensembles. You'll work closely with our faculty in private lessons and classes, acquiring the intensive training, skills, and experience you need for a career in music performance.

How you'll learn

A Full Liberal Arts Education in a Conservatory Setting
As a student in our program, you'll take 130 points, or credits, of classes: 40 in liberal arts and 90 in music core and music specialization courses. You will complete a range of liberal arts core courses, including introductory study of the humanities, social sciences, and scientific inquiry; and complete core music classes, including four semesters each in music history, music theory, aural comprehension, and keyboard harmony and improvisation. You will study privately with NYU’s renowned Percussion Studies faculty, participate in NYU Percussion Ensemble, NYU Percussion Chamber Music Ensemble, NYU Steel, NYU African Gyil, and Percussion Ensemble, NYU Orchestras, NYU Concert Band, and more.

Performance Opportunities
In addition to private instruction, you'll have numerous performance opportunities, choosing from percussion ensembles such as the NYU Percussion EnsembleNYU Marimba EnsembleNYU Steel, and NYU African Gyil and Percussion Ensemble chamber ensemblesjazz ensembles; the NYU Symphony and Philharmonia; and New Music ensembles. You'll study and perform classics, experimental music, world music, commercial music with films, and with dance and mixed ensembles.

Dual degree option: BM Music Performance/MA Music Education

We also offer a dual degree that allows you to earn a bachelor of music in composition or performance and a master of arts in music education in only five years. You can take courses towards your graduate degree during your junior and senior years, then complete the MA in one additional year of study, becoming eligible for New York State initial certification as a teacher of music, grades K-12.
