Nancy Barton an artist working in photography and social art practices. Her interests include rural and urban collaboration, social equity, feminism, and psychoanalysis. Barton's work centers on photography, installation, and collaborations with individuals and communities. She founded the non-profit Prattsville Art Center and Residency in the Catskill Mountains following a devastating hurricane in 2012. As a socially engaged creative placemaking laboratory that re-connects rural and urban communities through experimentation and collaboration, the Center has used the arts to anchor disaster recovery and bring diversity to a small town main street. The Center is located in a flood-damaged historic structure, which has been rebuilt as a site for residencies, exhibitions, performance festivals, teaching, and symposia that bring together contemporary art, rural culture, and community recovery. Barton's projects have been shown at MoMA, Greenspon, and American Fine Arts, and supported by ArtPlace America, the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, FEMA, and Creatives Rebuild New York. Ms Barton has exhibited, curated, taught, and lectured on art and creative placemaking in the US, Asia, Africa, and Europe. During her 25 year tenure at NYU, she has designed global art sites in Berlin, Ghana, and Abu Dhabi, and Chaired NYU’s Steinhardt Art Department.
