Facilities

This six story Beaux Arts building at 34 Stuyvesant Street in the East Village houses all of the Art Department's studios, shops, labs, and studios, as well as classrooms, exhibition spaces, and faculty offices. Barney Building facilities include private MFA studios, studio classrooms and workshops for sculpture, printmaking, painting, drawing, ceramics, metalsmithing, and sewing. In addition the building has photography labs and computer studios.

All MFA students get 24/7 access to private studios located on the 4th, 5th, and 6th floors of the Barney Building.

BFA Senior Studios are located at 75 3rd Ave and are available to students during their senior year. Seniors have 24/7 access to 62 individual studios, a specialized screening room, computer stations, a pantry, and four installation areas for critique. 

Open Studio events take place here as part of the Senior Studio experience.

The sculpture facility covers a full floor of the Barney building. It is divided into a fully equipped wood and metal shop which includes a CNC router, panel saw, Sawstop table saw, compound miter saw, vertical and horizontal bandsaws for both metal/woodworking, an air compressor system and downdraft table for sanding.  In addition, we have a plaster and moldmaking studio with a self contained spray booth room.

The print studio is equipped for multiple techniques, including silkscreen (photo-process darkroom), etching (two Charles Brand etching presses), relief print, book arts and letterpress (Vandercook UNI-1 press), and digital imaging/printing.

The Photography Department equipment Cage is located at the NYU Barney building 2nd floor. Our facilities and equipment are accessible solely to the Department faculty, students enrolled in MFA or BFA in Studio Art at NYU Steinhardt, and to students enrolled in photo classes in the Department.

Our department houses the photography equipment Cage, the B&W darkrooms, a film developing area, and two classrooms, equipped with iMacs, video projectors, digital printers, and flatbed scanners. Each classroom can also be converted into a photo studio, with black, white, or grey seamless backdrops.

The Cage has a large selection of equipment for loan, including 35mm cameras, medium and large format film cameras, DSLR cameras, HD and SD video cameras, tripods, various lighting kits, and sound recorders.

The Barney building has various digital facilities: a Digital Imaging Studio, an iMac Computer Lab, and a Fabrication Lab equipped with a range of creative software.

Students have access to large format archival printing and various other technologies. The Fabrication Lab offers access to several 3D printers, laser cutters, and vinyl cutting equipment.

Our third floor ceramic studio is fully equipped with gas (up and down drafts) kilns, a variety of electric kilns, extruders, slab rollers, glaze and clay making areas, clay and glaze chemistry, and potters' wheels. 

The metalsmithing studio enables techniques of small scale metal work, including hollow ware, forging, inlay, and coloring of metals. 

The mixed media area includes computerized sewing machines, industrial sewing machines and sergers and various support equipment for soft sculpture. 

Glass courses are conducted at Urban Glass in Brooklyn. Casting, blowing, cold working, neon, lamp work, and slumping are all available.
