Maurice Blackmon

Director, Center for Strategic Solutions

9083974252

Maurice Blackmon has spent a decade working to transform schools from the inside out. He worked in NYC Public Schools developing and teaching anti-racist, equity-based humanities and civics curricula, and supporting school- and city-wide youth organizing for education equity.  He has also worked with administrators on creating equitable policies and systems, has collaborated with educator communities to map out culturally responsive and sustaining curricula and pedagogy, and has led systemic implementation of restorative practices.

A founding coach of IntegrateNYC, a youth-based movement for education equity across NYC, Blackmon helped create the organization's 5Rs of Real Integration framework, which asserts bold, equitable solutions in five areas of impact for school communities: (1) Race & Enrollment, (2) Resource Allocation, (3) Relationships Across Group Identities, (4) Restorative Practices, and (5)  Representation of Diverse Teacher Identities.

His work in schools, and leadership with youth and community organizations, has inspired in him unique insights that will help support and evolve the vision of the Center for Strategic Solutions and Metro Center. His philosophy around education is that strong literacy and engagement in issues of social justice are the essential tools for critiquing our individual and collective values, our lives, and our society. Such critiquing generates discourse, incites action and inspires school transformation.
