Shane received his initial teaching certification from Bethlehem Teachers' College in Jamaica. At Bethlehem, he majored in Secondary Math and Science Education. Shane took a break from teaching mathematics in Jamaica to pursue further studies in the United States. He earned a Bachelors and Masters in education and special education, respectively, from the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater. Shane taught in Milwaukee Public Schools and later earned his PhD in Special Education from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Shane's expertise includes teacher preparation and educating students with learning and behavioral disabilities. As a former math and science teacher. Shane applies his K-12 experience to engage his pre-service teachers in a problem-solving, reflective discourse to understand the educational challenges and opportunities critical to educating students with special needs. At the core of Dr. Smith's research is the success of youth with disabilities. His research interests include postsecondary transition and mathematics education for students with high-incidence disabilities. He has also conducted research that explores pre-service teacher education and preparation to work in diverse settings, inclusive of students with unique learning challenges, interests, and opportunities.

Prior to joining NYU Shane worked as an Assistant Professor at the University of New Haven. As Special Education Course Coordinator, Shane lead the efforts to develop a special education program at UNH. He collaborated with colleagues on various projects around service, teaching, and research. Shane continues to use his K-12 experience as the foundation for the passion with which he engages in higher education, especially as it relates to preparing teachers to work in today's classrooms
