Diversity is the Conversation for NYU Steinhardt Students and Deans

Stella Flores and Charlton McIlwain had lunch with Steinhardt’s Weber Shandwick scholars last week.  The meeting was a chance to share insights about professional and educational opportunity.  Lauren Hom (pictured below, far right) is among four students chosen for the NYU at Weber Shandwick Masters in Residence, a program designed to increase the number of diverse professionals in the media industry.

Flores serves as Steinhardt’s associate dean for faculty development and diversity. Her areas of expertise include college access and completion policies for underrepresented and low-income students; affirmative action and diversity policies in higher education; state and federal higher education policy; and comparative and international college access policy.  She is an associate professor of higher education.

McIlwain, professor of media, culture, and communication, was Steinhardt’s first associate dean for faculty development and diversity.  In his role, he was charged with implementing strategic initiatives supporting faculty career productivity, improving diversity and equity among faculty, and developing an institutional climate conducive to faculty success.

McIlwain created the Faculty First Look program to prepare talented faculty of color for future professional success and Knowledge Partners, a program that has provided ongoing equity, diversity, and inclusion professional development for  faculty, administrators, and staff across the university. He is currently writing a book titled, Black Software: The Internet and Racial Justice from the Afronet to Black Lives Matter.
