NYU was the meeting place for NY EdTech Week, a global education innovation festival celebrating educational entrepreneurship. Hosted by NYU Steinhardt and StartEd Inc., the conference brought together technology and education thought leaders for discussion and debate on issues ranging from early literacy to corporate learning to making higher education accessible to minority students.
The conference was kicked off by Jonathan D. Harber of StartEd, who noted that New York City is an “ecosystem for education innovation,” since it has the largest K12 district, a major community college network, private colleges, education publishers, media outlets, and cultural institutions.
NYU President Andrew Hamilton called NYU Steinhardt’s residency-based technology-enhanced teacher education program an innovative learning platform that is “leading the way of quality online education.” He noted that the digital revolution is changing the way that universities teach, research, and share knowledge.
“The digital revolution will not destroy universities; it will enhance them,” Hamilton said.
The event featured “TED” style presentations from luminaries in the education field, panel discussions in early learning, K-12, higher education, and corporate learning, as well as performances from NYU Steinhardt dance education students and alumni who are currently appearing in Broadway musicals. There were also interactive sessions at NYU’s MusEd and CREATE labs.
Also presenting were: New York City School’s Chancellor Carmen Fariña (Steinhardt ’65); Stella Flores, associate professor of higher education, and Bridget O’Connor, professor of business education at NYU Steinhardt. David Kirkland, associate professor of English education, introduced Flocabulary, a performance based hip-hop education tool.
NY Edtech Week was the final class for members of the NYU Steinhardt Edtech Accelerator powered by StartEd, an intensive three-month, mentor-led boot-camp program designed to help educational technology entrepreneurs grow their companies. At the conference, the nine graduating startups presented pitches on business ventures that included an admissions and alumni engagement app and an augmented reality curriculum.
