Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates has been chosen as required reading for all students entering NYU Steinhardt School this fall. The book will be discussed in the New Student Seminar, a course that offers students a way to explore their role in the community using the reading as a guide.
Framed as a letter to his son, Between the World and Me explores the idea of race in America. Coates paints vivid portraits of the people who shaped his life during his coming of age journey from elementary student to public intellectual.
“Coates explores the reality and challenges that get in the way of belonging,” said Patricia Carey, associate dean for student affairs. “We think our students will find themselves in his book because it’s also a universal story about how each of us finds our place in the world.”
