NYU Steinhardt Congratulates NYU Alum Alan Menken (BA ’72) on Tony Award for Newsies

NYU alum Alan Menken (BA ’72) is the recipient of this year’s Tony Award for Best Original Score for the musical Newsies. Menken shares the award with lyricist, Jack Feldman.

It was the first Tony award for Menken, who has won eight Academy awards and eleven Grammy awards.  Among his award-winning scores are Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and Aladdin.  His stage credits include scores for Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act, Beauty and the Beast, and Newsies.

In 1998, Menken endowed Steinhardt’s Alan Menken Scholarship for promising undergraduate music composition students.
