Sharing the stage with graduating NYU students this year were healthcare leader Ivan Sabel (BS ’67), sculptor Joel Shapiro (MA ’69), and college president Carole Berotte Joseph (PhD’92). Each received Steinhardt’s Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award.
Sabel, who was honored at the Baccalaureate Ceremony, is the founder and president of Capital Orthopedics, which was acquired by the Hanger Group. The Hanger Ivan R. Sabel Foundation seeks to improve the mobility of people worldwide through prosthetic and orthotic related philanthropy.
At Steinhardt’s Valedictory Celebration, Shapiro, who is renowned for his dynamic artwork that is composed of single rectangular shapes, was recognized. Shapiro’s work is exhibited in galleries, museums, and public gardens in the United States and abroad.
Berotte Joseph, president of MassBay Community College, was honored at Steinhardt’s Doctoral Convocation. Berotte Joseph is a leader, organizer, teacher, and researcher, who has helped to advance bilingual education and education policy issues facing Haitian communities.
