Steinhardt and SCPS Launch Online Courses in Quality Assurance in Higher Education

The Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development in partnership with NYU’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS), has launched a new sequence of online courses in Quality Assurance in Higher Education. The program is offered through Steinhardt’s Program in Higher Education and is delivered in an asynchronous format, enabling students to study and learn from any location in the world.

The one-year program addresses the need for skilled quality assurance professionals who can design and apply appropriate standards and policies for assessing and maintaining the quality of colleges and universities around the world. Courses are open to NYU graduate students, as well as students in the United States and abroad; policy makers and professionals in governmental and non-governmental agencies; administrators and faculty in colleges and universities involved in assessment, institutional research, and other areas central to colleges’ and universities’ accreditation and related quality assurance activities.

The NYU program is unique, says Jean Morse, SCPS associate dean for academic affairs, because it examines quality assurance from several perspectives, including the international context. “The courses address questions such as: what is quality, how it can best be assured in different contexts, and what role should agencies and the colleges themselves play.”

The first two courses in the sequence will begin spring 2010. The third course will be offered in summer 2010, and the final course in fall 2010. Students who complete all four courses earn a Professional Certificate in Quality Assurance in Higher Education from NYU-SCPS. Each course can also be taken individually for 3 graduate credits.

The Quality Assurance in Higher Education courses have been endorsed by the International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE), which developed materials for the certification program with a grant from the World Bank.

The Steinhardt/SCPS collaboration brings together Steinhardt’s academic excellence in higher education scholarship with SCPS’s expertise in global education and online learning.

“We are excited to collaborate with the School of Continuing and Professional Studies and to experiment with new approaches to providing professionals with the tools they need to make a difference in education,” said Beth Weitzman, Steinhardt associate dean for academic affairs.
