Our Summer Workshop will not be held this summer as we are updating the program and will reintroduce it in Summer 2025. Thank you.
The NYU Contemporary Vocal Workshop is a two-week program devoted to the intensive study and performance of contemporary vocal music. Participants receive one-on-one training and group instruction with our world-renowned roster of faculty artists. The program’s workshop and masterclass series includes sessions on vocal technique, vocal health and wellness, song interpretation, dance, vocal improvisation, chart writing, songwriting, music business, and much more. Participants will also network with industry professionals throughout the program.
The workshop will culminate in a final public performance where each participant will perform a solo number. All artists will be accompanied by a professional band. The Contemporary Vocal Workshop is led by Dr. Justin John Moniz (Program Director) and Prof. Jamon Maple (Associate Director).
Audition Requirements
Please prepare two contrasting songs of your choice from the contemporary vocal repertoire. Selections may include: pop, rock, country, classical, jazz, musical theatre, R&B, hip-hop, etc. Please upload the two selections as two separate video files. You are encouraged to consider:
- Selecting songs in different styles that will allow you to demonstrate contrasting vocalisms
- Selecting songs in similar styles that showcase different aspects of your voice
- Selecting a ballad versus an uptempo where you may demonstrate the ability to sing sustained/legato lines versus singing a patter song or a song with a moderate to fast tempo.
Your performance should utilize the collaboration of a live musician (a pianist, guitarist, etc.), if possible. Self-accompanied selections are also acceptable. Pre-recorded tracks are an appropriate substitution when the utilization of live musicians is not possible.
