The Office of Global Affairs offers a limited number of competitive, need-based scholarships ranging from $500-$2000 for participation in Intersession and Summer study abroad programs. Undergraduate and graduate US citizens, permanent residents, and international students are eligible to apply.Scholarship awards are applied in the form of a discount to the student's Bursar bill for the term in which study abroad takes place. 

Students should apply concurrent with their study abroad application, using this form, so that the materials may be reviewed together. Materials will not be reviewed together if scholarship application is submitted after application round deadline. The scholarship application requests the following documentation in .PDF or .DOC format:

  • Financial Need Statement - essay of one page or less that describes student's current financial circumstances and explains the gap between the student's current financial resources and the cost of attending the study abroad program.
  • Current Resume
  • Copy of FAFSA Student Aid Report (US citizens only) or other financial documentation (international students).

Students must meet the following criteria in order to be eligible:

  • Display financial need through the documents requested on the program application.
  • Have submitted a FAFSA to your home institution during the current academic year, if a US citizen
  • Take three or more credits during the term in which study abroad is planned
  • Display financial need through documentation such as private loans, government loans, bank statements, etc. if an international student or non-student professional.

You are not eligible if you:

  • Receive tuition remission from NYU or your home university (this includes employees, spouses, and dependents)
  • Received, during the current academic year, any graduate-level fully funded fellowship or scholarship from NYU (including Steinhardt Fellows, Founders Fellows, and Research Assistants). Recipients of externally funded (non-NYU) scholarships are eligible.
  • Are enrolling as a non-credit participant

Astor Study Abroad Scholarship for Full-Time Teachers

The Astor Study Abroad Award has been created to help teachers in New York City, who are also students at NYU, finance international academic experiences.  Awards ranging from $500 to $2500 may be used to offset the cost of participation in NYU Steinhardt short-term study abroad programs.  Each year, a limited number of full-time teachers employed at a NYC public schools and charter schools will be awarded this scholarship made possible through the generous gift of Brooke Astor.  Awards and limited/competitive and will be granted as a discount on recipient's Bursar bill.

Eligibility criteria for the Astor Study Abroad Award are detailed below.  Those who wish to be considered for the award, should first apply to the NYU Steinhardt study abroad program of their choice, and then complete the application linked here.

Students must meet the following criteria in order to be eligible:

  • Matriculated as a student in degree program at NYU
  • Employed as a full-time teacher in a public or charter school within an NYC district  (Verification of employment is required at the time of application.)
  • Accepted and enrolled for credit in an NYU Steinhardt short-term study abroad program
  • Maintain good academic standing in respective NYU degree program

You are not eligible if you:

  • Receive tuition remission from NYU or your home university (this includes employees, spouses, and dependents)
  • Receive any graduate-level fully funded fellowship or scholarship from NYU (including Steinhardt Fellows, Founders Fellows, and Research Assistants)
  • Enroll in study abroad as a non-credit participant

Students may also consider alternative fund-raising sites such as Grant Space, a service of the Foundation Center, also offers additional information for securing educational funding.
