Contemporary struggles for racial justice are simultaneously global, highly networked, and relatively invisible on the world stage. This is to say when it comes to securing racial justice across the globe there is movement, but no Movement - especially as compared to the history's most high profile race-based social movements, the U.S. Civil Rights Movement and South Africa's Anti-Apartheid movement. Students in this course will explore the activists, organizations, policy makers and media influencers involved in contemporary established and emerging movements to secure racial justice across the globe.

The course locations - New York and London - places students at the heart of two networks for race-based global activism, facilitated through the Leadership Conference for Civil and Human Rights in the U.S., and the European Network Against Racism in the UK. Through course readings, lectures, guest speakers and site visits in New York and London, students will gain scholarly insight into how social movements work, and have the opportunity to engage with racial justice activists to understand how movement organizations operate, how they draw attention to their struggles, and the challenges they face in their work to secure racial justice and opportunity for people across the globe.
