Doctoral Student Spotlights

Roland Davis

Music and Performing Arts Professions

I chose this Doctoral Program Because:
NYU has a world-class jazz program and is known as an intellectual powerhouse with an emphasis on research and scholarship: with its faculty of esteemed researchers, musicians, and educators it attracts the best-of-the-best at the Doctoral level.
My academic passion is:
Empiricism and verifiable evidence over uninformed or unverified opinion: regardless of field
In 5 or 10 years I hope to:
Complete 2nd Doctorate and continue performing and teaching
One of the things I enjoy doing in New York City when I'm not being a doctoral student:
I'm never not a student!
Focus of my research of scholarship:
Composition and Theory: music
Research or scholar I most admire:
Drs. Schroeder, Rowe, Farbood, Mavromatis, Underwood...
Professor who has influenced me the most:
Dr. Rowe and Michael Breaux
Research project I've most enjoyed working on:
My PhD Dissertation: "A Qualitative Approach to Defining Style. Case Study: Scott Hamilton"
Scholarly presentation of my work I'm most proud of:
Carnegie Hall world-premiere of original composition/commission to sold-out audience and 2-time National award-winning string quartet
Favorite course as a doctoral student:
Dr. Rowe's "Psychology of Music"
What I like most about being part of a community of doctoral students:
Fellow PhD scholars are an endless resource for well-informed, well-articulated suggestions and inspiration!
