Doctoral Student Spotlights

Jim DeVivo

Educational Theatre

I chose this Doctoral Program Because:
The Program in Educational Theatre and its faculty have always been at the forefront of all aspects of the field. My experiences as a graduate student in the Masters degree program had such a significant impact on my professional work that returning to the Program was the best option for me.
My academic passion is:
theatre history and performance
In 5 or 10 years I hope to:
Teach and conduct research at a university
A hobby I have is:
I am a big baseball fan and enjoy watching games at all levels
My favorite place to get coffee or eat around NYU:
Washington Square Diner
Focus of my research of scholarship:
Playwriting by and for young people
I'm interested in this topic because:
Writing has a profound impact on a young person by providing them with the opportunity to speak and be heard. Often the young playwrights whose work I have produced have told me how important it was to them to not only have a forum for their voice, but to have adults validate their work by taking it seriously. I think that there is a great deal to be learned from this student experience that may benefit education as a whole.
Academic or other experience that most influenced my choice of doctoral study:
New Plays for Young Audiences Series at NYU and the New Jersey Young Playwrights Festival
Professor who has influenced me the most:
Lowell Swortzell
Research project I've most enjoyed working on:
I'm currently engaged in a retrospective and anthology of student work from the New Jersey Young Playwrights Festival
Favorite course as a doctoral student:
There are many, but to name a few: Case Study and Ethnography, Literature and the Adolescent Experience, and Problems in Play Production
