Current Students from South Korea

Name: Kyu Chul Lee

Where is home?  I was born and raised in South Korea. I love my family and friends and miss them in South Korea, but now Brooklyn, New York is my new home.

Status in NYU OT program: I am currently studying in the post-professional Master’s program in Occupational Therapy at NYU.

What was your educational/professional background in occupational therapy before coming to NYU? After graduating from Yonsei University, South Korea with a Bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy, I worked as a certified and licensed occupational therapist at Asan Medical Center, South Korea for two years. I treated patients on an acute care service diagnosed with neurological and degenerative diseases.

What are your research interests? I am interested in aging. To be more specific, Geriatrics with a focus on prevention management, cognitive impairment and interventions to maximize elders’ independence is my primary area of research interest. But I want to explore the various research interests in the MA program.

Why did you choose to attend New York University’s OT program? I am confident that I made the right decision. NYU’s OT program is the exact program I have been looking for. The program gives me a chance to broaden my perspective of occupational therapy, and I can honestly say that this program gives me opportunity that I would not have in my home country.  Moreover, the faculty are amazing! They have a serious interest in each student, and it is clear that they want the students to succeed in the OT program.

What do you like most about NYU so far? I think the variety of extra-curricular opportunities for international students is the best (ex, workshops, seminars, career fairs, free conversation groups and other various kind of activities that I can participate in). By attending these events, I love being surrounded by a group of people and sharing thoughts with each other. This will potentially make me a better person.

What are some things you are looking forward to doing in New York City? First, academic achievement is my primary goal. So I want to observe and experience the occupational therapy rehabilitation system in NY hospitals. Moreover, to live a colorful life is also important for me. I would like to attend a variety of events that NYU offers and participate in volunteer projects in NYC. I love to make and mingle with new friends from all around the world, try different kinds of food, enjoy the parks, go to concerts and Broadway shows, and visit museums.

What are your plans after graduation? I want to continue my studies as a researcher and build my career as an occupational therapist. I want to find new ways for people to live more independently and increase their quality of life.
