Mary Brabeck to Step Down as Dean in May

Mary BrabeckMary Brabeck, Gale and Ira Drukier Dean of the Steinhardt School, will step down in May after ten years of service. NYU President John Sexton notes that her tenure has had “a transformative impact” on the school’s academic and research profile, as well as its faculty and students.

NYU’s Musical Theatre Hall of Fame & Sweet Smell of Success

Sweet Smell of SuccessMarvin Hamlisch, the renowned late composer and conductor who wrote the music for ‘A Chorus Line’ and the hit song, ‘The Way We Were,’ was celebrated with the performance of his ‘Sweet Smell of Success,’ and an induction into NYU’s Musical Theatre Hall of Fame. The play was directed by John Simpkins and performed by Steinhardt students.

Some New York City School Teachers Will Spend Next Summer in Shanghai Thanks to the Generosity of Legendary New Yorker, Brooke Astor

Brooke AstorBrooke Astor created the Astor Fellows Travel Program, which rewarded public school teachers with a working professional development vacation abroad. The program, which ran from 1996-2003, and took teachers to Paris, Milan, and London, resumes this summer with an all-expenses-paid trip to Shanghai, made possible through a gift from Astor’s estate.

Does Eating a Variety of Foods Help You Lose Weight?

FoodA study by Maya Vadiveloo, a doctoral student researcher in the Department of Nutrition and Food Studies, shows that there is no consistent evidence showing that greater food variety increases the risk of obesity. The study was funded by the American Heart Association.

Grant Supports the Study of New Learning Phenomenon

New LearningSteinhardt School and Indiana University have received a $350,000 grant from the Hive Digital Media Learning Fund in The New York Community Trust for a research collaboration to study “lifewide” learning, the practice of learning in-school and out-of-school, 24-hours a day, seven days a week.
