NYU Metro Center is pleased to introduce Maurice Blackmon, the new director of our Center for Strategic Solutions (CSS).
Maurice joins NYU Metro Center after a nearly decade-long career as a public school teacher, working passionately and tirelessly with students to ignite their inner fires. He not only holds high expectations for them, but he also holds the ladder. With a keen sense of the possible, he is guided by a relentless belief that we can and must reshape settings within education and beyond it to sustain all of us. He believes in the power and potential collaborative justice, that those who are closest to our problems are closest to our solutions. He is an expert on issues of intersectional racial justice as it applies to the elusive quest to improve the educational experiences of vulnerable youth. He believes in and values youth wisdom and input, community collaboration and action, and spaces designed to heal and uplift.
Maurice joins NYU Metro Center with significant experience translating complex ideas into pragmatic practices--understanding the sacred alchemy of turning potential energy into kinetic power. He has spent the last several years collaborating with NYU Metro Center on various projects, both as a member of our CRSE working group and as a consultant. He is an expert on restorative practice, trauma-informed care, CRSE, social and emotional learning, reducing disproportionality, multilingual learners, young men of color, among other things.
We are excited to have Maurice join us full-time, especially as the NYU Metro Center leans more fully into its values, passions, and ideas for transforming and bringing solutions to districts, schools, classrooms, and other settings that make a difference in our children’s lives.
