TAC-D Hosted 15th Summer Institute

Metro's Technical Assistance Center on Disproportionality (TAC-D) project hosted its' 15th and final Summer Institute: Unleashing Leadership to Dismantle Disproportionately: Schools, Families, Communities and Youth on Friday, May 24, 2019.  This year’s Summer Institute brought together multiple leaders to discuss, address, and develop solutions to dismantle disproportionality. Youth, family, community, and school presenters offered engaging thought-provoking conversations and action steps on how they have created sustainable partnership efforts to develop solutions to address disproportionality.  

Prior Summer Institutes have focused on Culturally Responsive Education, Equitable Academic and Behavior Support Systems, School Discipline Through an Equitable Approach, and Guardians of Equity to name a few.  Such Summer Institutes have featured nationally and Internationally known scholars such as, Pedro Noguera, Russell Skiba, Margaret Beale Spencer, Gloria Ladson-Billings, Lisa Delpit, Wade Boykin, Jeffrey Duncan Andrade, Anne Gregory, Sonia Nieto, Django Paris, Kent McIntosh, Yohuru William, Khalil Gibran Muhammad, Shaka Senghor among many other.

This year’s Summer Institute featured: Youth TACD (YTACD), Dr. Eddie Fergus, Dr. Beth Harry, and Dr. Mica Pollock.  Besides the extraordinary keynote speakers the Institute’s program highlighted: five youth groups developing solutions to address disproportionality, a parent panel that brought together family and community organizers, a superintendent, and parent and family support specialist to address how to engage families in developing solutions and true educational partnerships. District and school leadership sessions were held by Dr. Khalifa Muhammad and our school and district leaders who have been making significant systemic shifts in equity through Culturally Responsive distributive leadership approaches, equity accountability systems, culturally responsive pedagogy and leadership by TAC-D’s advisory board member Dr. Ian Roberts, among many others. This year’s Summer Institute was mesmerizing, action focused, and inspired. We applaud TAC-D and their partners' contributions to this amazing event.
