Dr. Koff Co-Chairs Dance Committee for New NYS Learning Standards for the Arts

Members of the NYU Steinhardt Program in Dance Education community were deeply involved in the writing of the new New York State Learning Standards for the Arts, which have been approved and released by the Board of Regents. Dr. Susan Koff, director of the Dance Education program, was the co-chair of the Dance Standards Committee. She was joined on the committee by Kerrianne Cody, a public-school dance educator in New York City and a graduate of the program. Another alumnus, Andrew Jannetti, is the president of the New York State Dance Education Association, the organization now responsible for presenting the standards to the state's dance educators.
Adopting new learning standards was the first component of the New York State Statewide Strategic Plan for the Arts, developed from 2015-2016 by the New York State Education Department and numerous arts education stakeholders. The new standards are a revision of the original 1996 ones and were written to provide needed updates, while respecting lasting traditions. According to the strategic plan, the new standards “are designed to develop artistically literate citizens. An artistically literate citizen has the knowledge, skills, and understanding to actively engage in the arts throughout their lives. The intrinsic nature of the arts leads to and promotes a civilized, sustainable society. Artistically literate graduates are career and college ready, capable of understanding and addressing the needs of society, and participating in a global economy.”
