5 Food & Nutrition Trend Predictions for 2017

2016 was a wild year for food and nutrition from GMO labeling to shocking news about sugar, so what can we expect in 2017? We asked our very own Lisa Sasson, M.S., R.D., and Clinical Associate Professor of Nutrition at NYU Steinhardt. Her list takes us from snacks to cocktails to new nutrition labeling regulations. Bring on 2017!

1. Clean labels on food:

Consumers are demanding more transparency about what is actually in their food, so food major companies will soon follow suit. Expect to see shorter ingredient lists.

2. Hummus as a condiment:

We all love dunking veggies and chips into this creamy dip, so now is the time to try it as a low-cal high-protein sub for condiments on sandwiches and salads, amongst other things.

3. Herbs in cocktails:

Fresh basil lemonade or a thyme infused old-fashioned, anyone? These earthy flavors will freshen up cocktails and mocktails alike.

4. Fermented foods:

Kimchi, yogurt, and kombucha are not only delicious—but also prized nutritionally for their probiotic activity. Try incorporating more into your diet for 2017.

5. Increased prevalence of sugar substitutes:

Since added sugar will be required on nutrition labels, more sugar-free subs will be used in packaged foods to keep this number low.
