How to Audition for PhD in Music Performance

All prospective doctoral students must apply for admission to NYU Steinhardt before scheduling an audition. Apply for doctoral study.

Submit Your Pre-Screening Video

Applicants for the PhD in Piano Performance are required to submit a video pre-screening submission prior to being invited to a live audition. In this process, you will  upload them to GetAcceptd. All pre-screening submissions must be uploaded by December 1, 2018. Materials submitted after this date may not be accepted. Select applicants will be invited to audition in early January 2019.

Required Repertoire

PhD applicants should prepare 45-60 minutes worth of music. All works must be prepared in their entirety. All must be performed by memory, with exceptions on a case-by-case basis for certain contemporary compositions. Repertoire selection is free and should reflect the applicant's technical and interpretative strengths, as well as their areas of specialization. Please contact Dr. Marilyn Nonken directly at with any questions regarding audition repertoire

It is strongly recommended that applicants submit a curriculum vitae and repertoire list to Dr. Nonken.
