Chamber Music for Pianists

Piano Performance majors are required to register for chamber music each semester. Opportunities include ensembles coached by Artist Faculty in Piano Studies, Strings, and Winds, such as duos and trios, larger ensembles for mixed instrumentation, the NYU Contemporary Music Ensemble (directed by Jonathan Haas), and the NYU New Music Ensemble (directed by Esther Lamneck). Song Repertoire courses exploring the English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish traditions are co-taught by Artist Faculty in Vocal Performance and Piano Performance; these also fulfill the chamber requirement, as do placements with the NYU orchestras. For their assignment, piano performance majors should contact Dr. Marilyn Nonken

For pianists who are not pursuing performance majors, chamber opportunities include Four-Hand Piano Ensemble and Vocal Chamber Music, both coached by Jorge Parodi. Both courses offer pianists the opportunity to collaborate with each other in duos. Pianists are often joined by other instrumentalists and singers. In-class coachings culminate in an end-of-semester recital presentation.
Who Can Join

Pianists who are not pursuing a degree in Piano Performance may enroll in Four-Hand Piano Ensemble and Vocal Chamber music. These courses are ideal for Music Education majors and serious pianists with strong technical and sight-reading skills.
